Japan contributes 5.1 million USD to a UNIDO project in 14 CARICOM countries: “The Project for Industrial Development and Technology Transfer in the Member States of the Caribbean Community”

The Government of Japan extends its grant assistance to the CARICOM countries. UNIDO will cooperate with Japan and CARICOM countries on implementing the project “The Project for Industrial Development and Technology Transfer in the Member States of the Caribbean Community” with funding from Japan amounting to 730 million yen (approx. 5.1 million USD).
 
 
 
On December 14, in Tokyo, following the Japan-CARICOM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, attended by Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan as well as Foreign Ministers and other government dignitaries of CARICOM countries, Mr. ISHIZUKI Hideo, Director-General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan and Ms. ADACHI Fumio, Head, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Investment and Technology Promotion Office, Tokyo, signed and exchanged notes regarding the project’s implementation.

This project aims to contribute to the CARICOM countries’ ongoing efforts to overcome their vulnerabilities of water, agribusiness and other sectors, by providing equipment using various technologies from Japanese companies, inviting CARICOM government officials in charge of investment promotion to Japan, and providing technical cooperation in the industrial sector to facilitate industrial diversification and to address development using Japan and UNIDO’s expertise.
 
Japan has announced that it will implement the “cooperation towards sustainable development including overcoming vulnerabilities particular to Small Island Developing States” project as the first pillar of Japan's CARICOM Policy, with this assistance being implemented under this policy. Japan expects a steady project implementation which will benefit from UNIDO's expertise and experience in the area of technical cooperation. Japan and UNIDO will continue to cooperate closely in promoting the achievement of the SDGs.
