2025/3/26

On March 26, Mr. ISHIZUKI Hideo, Director-General, International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Ms. ADACHI Fumio, Head, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Investment and Technology Promotion Office, Tokyo, signed and exchanged notes for “the Project for Enhancing the Resilience of Key Industries to Natural Disasters in the State of Rio Grande do Sul” (amounting to 104.703 million yen) in Tokyo.
In May 2024, floods caused by heavy rainfall resulted in extensive human losses with over 150 casualties and more than 2.3 million residents affected in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Additionally, the state's key industries such as agriculture and livestock farming, suffered significant losses.
The project aims to strengthen the resilience of industries against natural disasters through analyzing the damage of flooding on key industries and value chains such as agriculture and livestock farming, utilizing digital technology, as well as through conducting disaster prevention awareness activities, providing training on infrastructure resilience and supporting the formulation of disaster prevention policies. These efforts are expected to contribute to the sustainable development of Brazil.
Furthermore, H.E. Mr. ISHIBA Shigeru, Prime Minister of Japan, and H.E. Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, have announced to enhance cooperation for strengthening disaster resilience in the “Japan-Brazil Strategic and Global Partnership Action Plan (2025-2030)”, and this project will be implemented as part of the commitment.
Japan expects a steady project implementation which will benefit from UNIDO's expertise and experience in the area of technical cooperation. Japan and UNIDO will continue to cooperate closely in promoting the achievement of the SDGs.
