Reception hosted by Ambassador Mr. Mitsuru Kitano and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in honour of assuming Chair Dr. Chiaki Mukai at the 54th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of COPUOS

On 30 January 2017, a reception was held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), hosted by Ambassador Mr. Mitsuru Kitano and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) in honour of Dr. Chiaki Mukai, JAXA’s Senior Advisor and Japan’s first female Astronaut, who assumed the role of chair on the occasion of the 54th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). Around 170 guests from delegations as well as international organizations and other bodies participated in this joyous reception.
 
In his introductory remarks, Ambassador Mr. Kitano wished the elected Chair a smooth chairpersonship during the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the COPUOS and in her many endeavors. Dr. Mukai’s leadership was pivotal in leading successful discussions on preparations for the fiftieth anniversary of UNISPACE (UNISPACE+50) to be held in 2018 as well as complex negotiations to further the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activity Guidelines.
