UNIDO Director-General visits Japan

2016/5/15
1. Mr. Li Yong, Director General of UNIDO visited Japan from 11 to 15 May.

2. During his visit to Japan, the DG paid a courtesy call to Mr. Masakazu Hamachi, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Tsuyoshi Hoshino, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.  He also engaged in an exchange of views on a wide range of matters related to the Japan-UNIDO relationship with Mr. Koichi Aiboshi, Director General of Global Issues. Mr. Li Yong also met with UNIDO partners from the public and private sectors at the Second Japan-UNIDO Multi-stakeholder Cooperation Dialogue, organized by UNIDO on 12th May, where he held a keynote speech.

3. Under the current circumstances, in which more effective use of Japanese financial contributions to international organizations is being requested, Japan expressed its expectations towards UNIDO to add value to the development process, and make further use of technology and know-how stemming from the private sector of Japan in UNIDO projects.  A proposal to strengthen the partnership between UNIDO and Japan was submitted by UNIDO to the Director General of Global Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which consists of an Action Plan and Review of the follow-up to the previous proposal. This turned the DG‘s visit into an occasion to seek further collaboration between Japan and UNIDO, which includes providing assistance to Africa via the TICAD process, promoting Human Security, utilizing Japanese technology and Japan’s know-how in UNIDO‘s services to recipient states, and the presence of Japanese officials in UNIDO Secretariat.
