UNIDO Director General Li’s visit to Japan

1 Mr. Li Yong, Director General of UNIDO, visited Japan from 8 to 10 April 2019. This was his sixth visit to Japan since his inauguration as Director General in 2013.
2 During his visit, DG Li paid courtesy calls to Mr. Kenji YAMADA, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Akimasa ISHIKAWA, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. He also engaged in an exchange of views with Mr. Hideo SUZUKI, Director-General for Global Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The DG Li additionally participated in bilateral meetings with the CEOs of NEDO and JETRO, with which UNIDO has been closely cooperating.
3 DG Li’s visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the reinforcement of cooperation between Japan and UNIDO in light of G20 meetings under Japan’s presidency, and TICAD7 to be held in August this year. The discussion covered collaboration in various areas, such as implementation of the SDGs - especially countermeasures to plastic marine litters - application of the Japanese private sector’s knowledge and technologies in UNIDO projects, and increasing the number of Japanese nationals working in the Secretariat.

4 During his visit, DG Li Yong took the opportunity to engage in dialogues with young researchers and students at the workshop and seminar of the University of Tokyo and Sophia University.
The DG also attended the UNIDO seminar, “Japan-UNIDO Multi-stakeholder Cooperation Dialogue”, where he had discussions with participants from the Japanese private sector.
