Fact sheet on UNSCEAR Fukushima Report

The report addresses “Levels and effects of radiation exposure due to the nuclear accident after the 2011 Great East-Japan Earthquake and Tsunami”. The main focus is on the exposure to radiation of various groups of the population. The environmental assessment addresses marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

After the accident at the TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi NPP, strengthening the global nuclear safety framework has become one of the main priorities of the IAEA. The IAEA helped to channel international assistance to Japan and began sharing information about the accident worldwide.

The IAEA's Fact-Finding Mission in Japan visited the damaged TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on 27 May 2011, the final site visit of the team's programme to identify lessons from the Japanese nuclear accident that could help improve global nuclear safety.

European and African experts take part in IAEA Emergency Preparedness and Response Workshop in Fukushima Prefecture. This workshop discussed how to prepare for and respond to nuclear or radiological emergencies. Japanese experts participated as lecturers, and the workshop was supported by the Fukushima Prefecture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Seawater Sampling in Fukushima: IAEA and Japanese Experts Conduct Joint Mission (Nov 2014)

Recent proficiency tests organised at the request of Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority were carried out between June to August 2014 to test the analytical performance of participating laboratories for radionuclides in a sea water sample. A total of 30 laboratories from 15 countries participated in this exercise, 12 from Japan and 18 from IAEA Member States in Europe and the USA. Photos of these missions are shown in this IAEA Image bank.

The Practical Export Control Workshop was hosted by the Wassenaar Arrangement as part of its 20th Anniversary programs and held at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna on 27 and 28 June 2016. More than 100 government representatives from 46 countries participated in the technically focused Practical Workshop.
 
Workshop speakers included the 2016 WA Plenary Chair Ambassador Anu Laamanen (Finland), 2016 WA General Working Group Chair Ambassador Paul Beijer (Sweden), 2015-2016 WA Experts Group Chair Robertas Rosinas (Lithuania), 2016 WA Licensing and Enforcement Officers Meeting Chair Jon Erik Strömö (Norway), as well as the Head of the WA Secretariat, Ambassador Philip Griffiths. The WA control lists as well as export licensing and enforcement topics were covered during the two days.
