Statement by Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting in September 2016

2016/9/22

Item 10: Any Other Business : Informal Dialogue between Coastal and Shipping States on Transport

Thank you, Mr. Chairman,

Taking advantage of this opportunity, I would like to update you on the activities of the informal dialogue between coastal and shipping states on transport, on behalf of the countries participating in the dialogue.

This informal dialogue process is aimed at improving mutual understanding, confidence-building and enhancing communication. Japan took over the role of chair from Chile in September last year.

Based on “Road Map 2015-2016” which contains a number of action plans of the dialogue, participating countries visited a transport ship of radioactive material in the UK from the 12 to 13 July which allowed us  an opportunity to enhance our understanding on the transport of radioactive material. This visit significantly contributed to enhancing participants’ understanding on safety measures on the transport ship of radioactive material.
In addition, we are proceeding with the preparation for next Table-Top exercise which is being planned for 2017 onward.

Taking this opportunity, allow me to inform all Member states that the annual meeting of the dialogue will be held on September 29th at 2 p.m. during the IAEA General Conference.  Any Member State is able to attend this annual meeting as an observer. If your country is interested in the dialogue process, I would kindly encourage participation to the meeting.

Japan will hand over the chair of this dialogue to Portugal at the next annual meeting. We expect further progress of this dialogue process under the able leadership of Portugal, and we continue to support the chair and this dialogue process actively.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
