On 4 July in Tokyo, Japan, Ms. Yoko Kamikawa, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, and Ms. Ghada Waly, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), signed and exchanged notes on Japan’s grant assistance for the project “Strengthening Counter-Narcotics Capacities in Afghanistan” in the amount of 1.514 billion yen.
The project will support the promotion of licit crop cultivation and other income-generating activities to help farmers move away from illicit poppy cultivation, and the reduction of illicit drug use. By reducing illicit drug production and the negative health impacts caused by illicit drug use, the project is expected to contribute to ensuring healthy lifestyles and supporting sustainable and self-reliant development for the people of Afghanistan.
