2014/11/14
On 14 November 2014, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna hosted a side event “Building Laboratory Networks in Food Security“, on the occasion of the FAO/IAEA International Symposium on Food Safety and Quality.

In their welcoming remarks, Permanent Mission of Japan appreciated the Agency’s unique contribution in addressing various global issues, such as food security, and reiterated its support to the Agency’s activities in those areas, including through IAEA Peaceful Uses Initiative (PUI), and Mr Qu-Liang, Director of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in food and agriculture, provided an overview on the Agency’s activities in creating laboratory networks, highlighting some successful outcomes they have achieved.

After screening a short film, entitled “Protecting Africa's Lifeblood: Animal Disease Control in Cameroon”, a presentation was held on the launch of a programme in Asia, which already has been introduced in Sub-Saharan Africa, concerning animal disease diagnosis. Mr. Charles Lamien, who works at the Animal Production and Health Laboratory of the IAEA, described the programme which focuses on research and development of diagnostic platforms to build the capacities of veterinary laboratories.

Furthermore, a presentation on “Food Safety Laboratory Network in Latin America” was held by Mr. James Jacob Sasanya who works for the Food and Environmental Protection Section of the IAEA. The project aims at strengthening national food safety programmes and enhancing laboratory networks, through the implementation of a holistic approach to food safety that targets both chemical and microbial hazards.
The Practical Export Control Workshop was hosted by the Wassenaar Arrangement as part of its 20th Anniversary programs and held at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna on 27 and 28 June 2016. More than 100 government representatives from 46 countries participated in the technically focused Practical Workshop.
