Japan contributes additional 3.8 million USD to a UNIDO project in Zambia for the promotion of youth employment through construction equipment operating skills training

2021/9/28
The Government of Japan extends its grant assistance to the Republic of Zambia. UNIDO will cooperate with Japan and Zambia in implementing the Project “Promoting Youth Employment through Construction Equipment Operating Skills Training” with funding from Japan amounting to 417,000,000 Japanese Yen (approx. 3.8 million USD).

H.E. Mr. MIZUUCHI Ryuta, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Zambia, and Mr. Khaled El Mekwad, UNIDO Representative, Regional Office in South Africa, signed and exchanged Notes regarding implementation of the project on 28 September 2021 in Lusaka.

The Project aims to increase employment opportunities for youths by providing them with construction equipment operating skills acquired through vocational training. As such, the project is expected to contribute to infrastructure development and economic growth in Zambia.

Japan is working with UNIDO on industrial human resource development through vocational training in several African countries. Projects in Liberia and Uganda, aiming at skills development for heavy construction equipment operation and maintenance, and a project in Sierra Leone, aiming at skills development for automotive maintenance, are examples of this cooperation.

Japan expects that UNIDO will steadily implement this project making use of its expertise and experience in technical cooperation. Japan and UNIDO will continue to cooperate closely in promoting the achievement of the SDGs.
