Japan contributes to the IAEA for the acquisition of special vehicles to support the continued presence of the Mission at the Zaporizhzhya NPP

2022/11/17

IAEA experts stationed at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine are fulfilling extremely important roles in collecting objective and accurate information at the site and ensuring the stable operation of the facility.

To support the commendable efforts made by the IAEA Secretariat to maintain the safe and continuous presence of these experts, Japan recently decided to reallocate approximately US $800,000 from Japan's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Fund for the procurement of four special vehicles. The vehicles will be used to support the continued periodical rotation system for the presence of the IAEA Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhya (ISAMZ) and other activities.

On 17 November 2022, H.E. Mr. HIKIHARA Takeshi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, informed H.E. Mr. Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA of Japan's decision.

Mr. Grossi appreciated this generous pledge and said that Japan was an indispensable partner and helped the IAEA fulfil their mission of nonproliferation, safety and security, and peaceful nuclear uses.

Japan will continue to support the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure nuclear safety and security in Ukraine.
