Statement by Minister TANINAI Ichitomo at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting starting on Monday, 9 June 2025 Item 6(e): Implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement in the Syrian Arab Republic

Thank you, Chair,
Japan welcomes the latest developments achieved through the DG's visit to Syria and commend his engagement toward the resolution of the issues.
Japan commends also the Syrian Care-Taker Government for resuming talks with the Agency. We strongly encourage the Care-Taker Government to seize the opportunity to resolve all outstanding issues left by the previous regime, which cannot remain unaddressed, and to fully cooperate with the Agency.
We also call upon Syria to consider seriously concluding an Additional Protocol, which provides a greater confidence among States with regard to transparency on nuclear activities and commitment to nuclear non-proliferation.
Japan requests the Director General to keep the Board of Governors informed on this issue and retain this item on the agenda.
