Statement by Ambassador KAIFU Atsushi at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting starting on Monday, 9 June 2025 Item 13: Any Other Business
2025/6/13
Thank you, Chair,
With regard to Australia’s naval nuclear propulsion program, Japan welcomes the updates given by Australia. We appreciate their efforts to further ensure transparency and their firm commitment to maintaining the highest possible non-proliferation standards.
Japan trusts that the Secretariat will carry out its work in accordance with the Agency’s statutory mandate and the relevant safeguards agreements. We steadily support their dedicated efforts to find ways to facilitate possible verification and monitoring activities in relation to the program.
Chair,
Regarding the attack on nuclear site in Iran carried out by Israel; Amid the ongoing diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Iran’s nuclear issue, including the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran, the use of force is completely unacceptable and deeply regrettable. Japan also understands that Iran has reportedly launched an attack against Israel.
Japan deeply concerns vicious cycle of retaliation and strongly condemns any action that leads to the escalation of the situation.
Chair,
Japan notes that the Agency can confirm Natanz site among targets of the attack. Japan is closely monitoring the situation as any attack to nuclear facilities may pose risks to the nuclear safety and security.
Thank you, Chair.
