Statement by Ambassador KAIFU Atsushi at the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting on Monday, 2 March 2026 Item 1: Matters referred to in document GOV/2026/21 (Iran)
2026/3/2
Thank you, Chair,
Japan carefully takes note of the DG's initial statement on the current situation in Iran and its nuclear facilities after the attacks on February 28 and expresses appreciation for sharing this information in a timely manner. Japan will closely monitor the situation.
Iran's development of nuclear weapons must never be allowed for the sake of maintaining the international nuclear non-proliferation regime. Japan has been pursuing diplomatic efforts to resolve Iran's nuclear issue in coordination with relevant countries and the Agency. And, talks between the United States and Iran are extremely important for resolving this issue, and Japan has strongly supported them.
The peace and stability of the Middle East and maintaining the international nuclear non-proliferation regime are of utmost importance to Japan. Japan will continue to make all necessary diplomatic efforts, in coordination with the international community, to bring about an early settlement of the situation.
I will elaborate Japan’s position on matters related to Iran’s nuclear issue under related agenda item of regular board meeting later on.
Last but not least, we express our deep appreciation and support for DG’s readiness to continue engaging in this issue and providing the Board with timely information on the situation in Iran.
Thank you, Chair.
