2016/4/7

On 7 April 2016, on the occasion of the 55th session of the Legal Subcommittee of COPUOS, a seminar titled “Cross-cutting perspectives in space law” was co-hosted by JAXA and CNES (Japanese and French Space Agencies) together with the Universities of Keio and IDEST/Paris-Sud, and with the support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Japan and France.

The seminar was opened by Mr. Kazuaki Kawabata, Vice President of JAXA and Mr. Jacques Raharinaivo, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the UN in Vienna, and moderated by Professor Philippe Achileas, of IDEST Paris-Sud University. Ten distinguished presenters representing a wide range of space agencies and leading academic institutions in the field of space law presented on lessons-learned cases of international cooperation, national space laws, and the legal challenges posed by new civil space activities.

Following an extensive question and answer session from the audience, the seminar was concluded by Professor Setsuko Aoki of Keio University and Chair of the Working Group on the Review of International Mechanisms for Cooperation in the Peaceful Exploration and Use of Outer Space. Afterwards, the panel and audience members were invited to partake in an informal reception at the Vienna International Center.
