Reception co-hosted by State Minister Hirotaka Ishihara and Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano on the occasion of the 60th IAEA General Conference

On September 26th, a reception co-hosted by Mr. Hirotaka Ishihara, State Minister of Cabinet Office, Head of Japanese Delegation, and Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano, Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, took place on the occasion of the 60th IAEA General Conference.
The reception commemorates the 60th anniversary of the IAEA and highlighted Japan’s continuous contributions to the IAEA’s various activities in the area of peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. Over 150 people participated in the reception, including Director General of the IAEA Mr. Yukiya Amano, a number of heads of delegations of IAEA Member States, Ambassadors of Permanent Missions in Vienna, senior staffs of the IAEA and UNSCEAR, Japanese staffs of International Organizations in Vienna, and members of the press.
Following Ambassador Kitano’s introductory remarks, State Minister Ishihara made his welcoming remarks. State Minister Ishihara emphasized steady progress of post-Fukushima activities and Japan’s strong support for IAEA’s “Atoms for Peace and Development”, as well as expressed his gratitude to Japanese experts and staffs working at the IAEA and other international organizations in Vienna. State Minister Ishihara also reiterated Japan’s full support for Director General Amano’s reelection for the next term expressed in his statement at the Plenary of the IAEA’s 60th General Conference, and called on all attended delegations at the reception for their support.
Director General Amano also made his remarks, in which he expressed his appreciation for Japan’s contribution to the Agency, in particular in the area of peaceful uses of nuclear technology and highlighted a number of achievements made by the Agency in the past 60 years. He reiterated that he would be honored to serve the third term as Director General as he made clear in his statement at the General Conference.
The reception exhibited panels and DVDs demonstrating Japan’s R&D activities conducted by its research institutions, Japan’s continuous contributions to various global issues in cooperation with the IAEA, reconstruction work in the areas affected by Fukushima Daiichi accident, and recovery efforts at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. The demonstration helped deepen participants’ understanding about reconstruction activities and efforts.
