Japan-UNIDO Cooperation: Assistance to 12 countries in their fight against COVID-19 with Japanese technologies (4 million USD)
2020/11/13
In the project of United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) funded by Japan (approx. 4 million USD), 12 countries in Asia and Africa will be assisted in their fight against COVID-19 with the technologies of 13 Japanese private companies. The project aims at supporting developing countries in need, by transferring various relevant Japanese technologies, such as disinfectant production, clean water provision, and safe medical waste disposal.
UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Tokyo (ITPO Tokyo), founded by UNIDO and Japan, plays a key role in this project. 13 companies were selected from those that have their technologies registered with the Sustainable Promotion Platform (STePP), a successful platform operated by ITPO Tokyo.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a human security crisis for the international community as a whole. In order to mitigate its impact in developing countries, it is important to cooperate with the private sector, and mobilize its strength and available technologies. Japan places importance on UNIDO’s function as a bridge between developing countries and the private sector of donor countries. Japan hopes that this project will be promptly implemented by UNIDO in cooperation with the 13 Japanese companies, and will rapidly strengthen these developing countries’ response to COVID-19.
