Visit of UNIDO Director General to Japan
2015/5/15
1 Mr. Li Yong, Director General of UNIDO visited Japan from 13 to 15 May.
2 During his visit to Japan, the DG paid a courtesy call to Mr. Yasuhide Nakayama State Minister for Foreign Affairs and Mr. Yoshihiro Seki, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. He also engaged in an exchange of views on a wide range of matters related to the Japan-UNIDO relationship with Mr. Atsuyuki Oike, Director General of Global Issues. The DG also met with Japanese private sector actors, e.g. at the seminar “Sustainable Industrialization for Shared Prosperity “Public-Private Partnerships in the era of Post-2015 Development Agenda”, organized by UNIDO on 14th May, where the DG held a keynote speech.
3 Under the current circumstances, in which more effective use of Japanese financial contributions to international organizations is being requested, Japan expressed its expectations towards UNIDO to add value to the development process, and make further use of technology and know-how stemming from the private sector of Japan in UNIDO projects. A proposal to strengthen the partnership between UNIDO and Japan was submitted by UNIDO to the Foreign Minister of Japan, turning this DG‘s visit into an occasion to seek further collaboration between Japan and UNIDO, which includes providing assistance to Africa via the TICAD process, promoting Human Security, utilizing Japanese technology and Japan’s know-how in UNIDO‘s services to recipient states, preparing an appropriate next biennium budget, and the presence of Japanese officials in UNIDO Secretariat.
