2017/3/7
The Government of Japan has decided to make a contribution of 23 million USD to UNODC from its 2016 fiscal year supplementary budget. This year’s donation is the largest pledged to date and was conceived to help combat world drug problems, transnational organized crime, terrorism and violent extremism. It will be distributed as follows:

  • 12 million USD to support projects in Asia,
  • 9 million USD to support projects in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries and
  • 2 million USD to support projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Combating terrorism has become one of the most urgent international issues of our time, which was confirmed at the G7 Summit hosted by Japan last year.  Japan also announced its enhanced effort in this area at the ASEAN forum. Combating terrorism and violent extremism in Asia is vital to enhancing the security of Japanese enterprises and citizens in Asia. As such, a prompt response is needed.
The importance of combating terrorism has also been addressed in the Doha Declaration adopted in 2015 during the 13th Crime Congress in Doha. Japan, as the host country of the next Congress, attaches high importance to the implementation of the Doha Declaration and this year’s donation will also serve to promote its implementation to this end.

On  7 March 2017, H.E. Mr. Mitsuru Kitano, Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna participated in a signing ceremony and an exchange of notes with the Executive Director of UNODC, Mr. Yury Fedotov.  Ambassador Kitano underscored the important role of UNODC in combating terrorism and violent extremism and cemented Japan’s commitment to collaborating on these endeavours.
