Seminar on “Japan’s Unique Technology that Supports Space Frontier” at the 53rd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of COPUOS

On 16 February 2016, on the occasion of the 53rd session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of COPUOS, a seminar on “Japan’s Unique Technology that Supports Space Frontier -From Nobel Prize research enabled by ‘Super-Kamiokande’ and the ISS Rendezvous-docking by ‘Kounotori’-” was held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
 
Mr. Mitsuru Kitano, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna delivered his opening remarks at the seminar, which was then moderated by Ms. Chiaki Mukai, Technical Advisor to the Executive Director and Astronaut of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Ms. Chiaki Mukai was elected as the Chair of the 54th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee under item “Election of the Chair” on 15 February. The three distinguished presenters, Mr. Kenzo Nakamura, Professor of Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe, The University of Tokyo, Mr. Kiyoshi Higuchi, President of International Astronautical Federation (IAF), and Mr. Koji Yamanaka, Director of Research Unit I, Research and Development Directorate, JAXA made presentations on Japan’s unique technology that supports space activities and research and development such as Nobel Prize research enabled by ‘Super-Kamiokande’ and the ISS Rendezvous-docking by ‘Kounotori’.
 
Following the seminar, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan hosted a well-attended reception.
