Seminar on “International mechanisms for cooperation in space exploration: a discussion of current and future mechanisms”

On 28 March 2014, on the occasion of the fifty-third session of Legal Subcommittee of COPUOS, a seminar on “International mechanisms for cooperation in space exploration: a discussion of current and future mechanisms” was held at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the delegations of Canada and the United States of America. Delegations from 37 countries as well as from international organizations and other bodies participated in this seminar.
 
Following the opening remarks by Deputy Permanent Representative Mr. Hidehiko Hamada, Ms. Robin Frank, Senior Counsel, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), made the first presentation entitled “Current international cooperative mechanisms: the International Space Station (ISS) and the 2014 International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF)”, and Dr. Jean-Marc Chouinard, Head, Policy and Regulatory Affairs, Policy and External Relations, Canadian Space Agency(CSA), made the second presentation entitled “Advancing the Global Exploration Strategy: The ISECG Global Exploration Roadmap”. Finally, Prof. Setsuko Aoki, Keio University and the Chair of Working Group on review of international mechanisms for cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space,made the final presentation entitled “A preview of future international mechanisms for cooperation in the area of space exploration”. There were extensive questions from audience.
 
Dr. Yasushi Horikawa, Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and COPUOS Chair, who moderated this seminar, noted in his conclusion that today international cooperation becomes more indispensable method to tackle with global issues such as space debris and ensure safe and sustainable space activities, as well as to extend benefits derived from space exploration to all mankind. He also pointed out that the international cooperative framework and corresponding instruments plays an important role in this regard.
 
After the seminar, there was a reception hosted by Ambassador Toshiro Ozawa.
