Symposium on ‘Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology: toward the 2015 NPT review conference and beyond’
2015/2/24
On the 24th February 2015, the Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna and Permanent Mission of Brazil to the IAEA and CTBTO jointly hosted a Symposium ‘Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology: toward the 2015 NPT review conference and beyond’.
The aim of the symposium was to highlight the importance of peaceful uses of nuclear technology as one of the three pillars of the NPT, in the run-up to the 2015 NPT Review Conference and raise awareness and enhance the understanding of the important role nuclear technology plays in addressing various developmental and environmental challenges, with due consideration to the UN process of finalizing the post 2015 Development Agenda and concluding future climate regime at COP21.
Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano said “nuclear science and technology will play a unique and important role” in addressing various global issues, but “unfortunately these aspects are not well recognized yet” in his opening remark at the symposium. In this regard, the main aim of the symposium was “to raise people’s awareness on a wider range of opportunities for applications of nuclear technology”. Recognizing important role of the IAEA in peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, particularly its great efforts in recent years, he stressed that “we should keep this momentum in the next coming years”.
At five session of the symposium, speakers from Permanent Missions in Vienna, IAEA and other international experts shared their views on the positive impact nuclear applications can have on NPT and other global challenges and on how to promote peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology including their future uses. The first session focused on how we can promote peaceful use of nuclear science and technology in the context of NPT as well as other global agendas. This was followed by sessions on nuclear applications in human health and nutrition, food and agriculture, water management and environmental protection as well as in energy. During the course of discussion, strong expectations to the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology were expressed by many speakers.
Ambassador Kitano concluded with his observation of the discussion that “there is a need to enhance access to peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, there is a need to further widen application of nuclear technology, and there is a need to enhance nuclear safety and radiation protection”.
