Ambassador Mitsuru KITANO signed the Terms of Reference for the IAEA Mission on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS

  1. On 18 September 2018, Ambassador Mitsuru KITANO signed the Terms of Reference for the IAEA Mission on the Decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi NPS together with Mr. Mikhail CHUDAKOV, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Energy, at IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria.
  2. The IAEA mission is to be dispatched at the request of the Government of Japan. The mission will review Japan’s effort for decommissioning the units as well as challenges they face, and provide its evaluation and advice to Japan. Japan has received three reports containing IAEA evaluation and advice in the past. This mission, scheduled from 5 to 13 November, will be the fourth one. 
  3. Ambassador Mitsuru KITANO stated that “The decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station is a lesson for the world. In order to advance the decommissioning process of Fukushima Daiichi NPS appropriately, close cooperation between Japan and the IAEA is important. The Japanese government welcomes advice from the IAEA’s expertise on  such field as the progress from the previous review and future efforts.” during the Signing Ceremony.
     
< Decommissioning Review Mission>
         In accordance with the Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap towards the Decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, which was revised in September 2017, Japan has been advancing efforts for decommissioning TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi NPS. The IAEA mission is to be dispatched at the request of the Government of Japan. The mission will review Japan’s effort for decommissioning the units as well as the challenges they face, and provide its evaluation and advice to Japan. Japan received two reports on its evaluation and advice in the past.
      - First visit: April, 2013
      - Second visit: November, 2013
       -Third visit: February, 2015
         During the fourth visit, the mission will hold meetings with the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, TEPCO, and other entities, conduct a field study at Fukushima Daiichi NPS, and release a summary of the results of the review on the final day of the visit.
