Workshop on Nuclear Safety: Current Status and Future Challenges

2016/7/4
Hosted by Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation (VCDNP) and
Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna
Date: 4th July 2016
Place: 24th Floor, Andromeda Tower

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and 5th of the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

Having learnt lessons from them, our efforts to strengthen nuclear safety have produced significant achievement such as the completion of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, the release of the IAEA report on the Fukushima Daiichi accident, the adoption of the Vienna Declaration on Nuclear Safety, the entry-into-force of the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear damage (CSC).

Meanwhile, relentless efforts are required for even stronger nuclear safety. It is important for us to deal with remaining challenges in the area of nuclear safety, incorporating the lessons learnt from previous accidents.

This workshop aims at sharing findings and experiences of our past efforts and activities to identify future tasks ahead of us, and discussing a next step to establishing stronger nuclear safety.
