Ambassador Kitano hosted an IAEA Reception on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Mr. Seiji Kihara

On 13 June, a reception hosted by Mr. Mitsuru Kitano, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna, took place on the occasion of the visit of H.E. Mr. Seiji Kihara, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, at the Vienna International Centre. Approximately 70 people participated in the reception, including a number of Ambassadors of Permanent Missions in Vienna, Director General of the IAEA Mr. Yukiya Amano and senior staffs of the IAEA.
The reception began with Ambassador Kitano’s introductory remarks, followed by State Minister Kihara’s welcoming remarks in which he highlighted the importance of IAEA activities including in nuclear non-proliferation, safety and security, and the promotion of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. State Minister Kihara also emphasized that Japan has made this position very clear on a number of occasions including in the G7 Summit process that Japan hosted as a Chair this year, and that Japan strongly supports “Atoms for Peace and Development” advocated by DG Amano.
Subsequently, DG Amano looked back on the IAEA’s major achievements in the past 60 years in his remarks and expressed his deep appreciation to strong support of the IAEA Member States and dedication of the IAEA staffs for making these achievements.He also emphasized the necessity of IAEA’s continuous work on addressing a variety of challenges including implementation of the JCPOA addressing the Iranian nuclear issues and of the Sustainable Development Goals, and stated that he is ready and keen, with the support of the Member States, to continue providing the necessary leadership in the years ahead as the IAEA undertakes these historic challenges.
