On 12-13 July, Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano of Permanent Mission of Japan to the International Organizations in Vienna visited a transport ship of nuclear materials with participating countries of the Informal Dialogue between coastal and shipping states (Current chair: Ambassador Kitano) at Barrow terminal in the central western part of UK. Ambassadors and representatives of seven counties of the Dialogue participated in the visit.

The purpose of the visit was to further enhance mutual understanding and confidence-building on maritime transport of radioactive material and to understand  safety measures of transport ship of radioactive material among relevant counties of the Dialogue. In the visit, participants received a thorough explanation from WNTI(World Nuclear Transport Institute),INS(International Nuclear Services) and PNTL(Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited) about safety measures of the transport ship and the terminal at the port. They then visited and observed the transport ship and terminal.

The visit was very beneficial for all participants. Some participants commented that they could get a better understanding on maritime transport of nuclear materials and safety measures of transport ship. The Japanese government will continue its efforts to improve mutual understanding and confidence-building on maritime transport of radioactive material though the Informal Dialogue mechanism and other means.
