A Commendation Ceremony by Ambassador Kitano to Dr. Takao Doi, Expert on Space Applications and Chief of the Space Applications Section in the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs

On 28 January 2016, Ambassador Kitano presented Dr. Takao Doi, Expert on Space Applications and Chief of the Space Applications Section in the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) with an Ambassador’s commendation in view of his outstanding achievements. The commendation ceremony was held at the Ambassador’s residence on the occasion of the 2016 New Year’s reception for Japanese staff of the International Organizations in Vienna, with about 100 participants.

Dr. Doi has been committed to promoting international cooperation on peaceful uses of outer space, global dissemination of space technology, and educational activities at UNOOSA since 2009. During his tenure, Dr. Doi launched Human Space Technology Initiative (HSTI). What is particularly noteworthy in relation to Japan is that he initiated a joint program that would offer developing countries the opportunities to deploy cube satellites from the International Space Station, Japanese Experimental Module “Kibo”. This was his great contribution to Japan’s international cooperation through the partnership with UNOOSA.

During this ceremony, Ambassador Kitano introduced his accomplishments stated above, and went on to add that “Such accomplishments bring pride to us in the international society, and serve as powerful encouragement for us to follow.”, and presented him with a commendation certificate (see above left picture).

Dr. Doi expressed his sincere gratitude to Ambassador Kitano and the Permanent Mission of Japan, and gifted Ambassador Kitano a memento of his flight mission to the International Space Station to deliver the first module of “Kibo” in 2008 (see above right picture).
