[Agenda Item 16: Report on the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III). Report by the Director General]
Japan takes note of the report by the Director General PBC.41/14 on the Annual update on the Third Industrial Development Decade for Africa (IDDA III). We acknowledge UNIDO’s efforts and achievements across various sectors critical to Africa’s sustainable industrial development.
Looking ahead, Japan sees great potential in aligning the upcoming IDDA IV with the TICAD process. TICAD 9, the ninth Tokyo International Conference for African Development, will be held in Yokohama this August, aiming at co-creating innovative solutions with Africa. Japan co-hosted the “UNIDO-Japan Partnership for Africa” event this March here in Vienna. The event underscored our joint commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable industrial development serving as an important milestone in preparation for TICAD 9. We extend our sincere appreciation to UNIDO for its invaluable support in emphasizing Africa’s industrial development priorities.
During this event, Japan held a kick-off ceremony for five new UNIDO projects covering Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania, and one regional project. These projects target critical areas such as circular economy solutions, agri-tech ecosystem resilience, green business development, food and water security, and recovery support including assistance to landmine victims.
Japan’s ongoing support includes numerous projects aimed at enhancing food value chains, job creation through skills development, sustainable plastic value chains, and climate innovation. ITPO Tokyo continues to play a pivotal role with its Sustainable Technology Promotion Platform (STePP) and industrial vocational training programmes, generating sustainable business opportunities and enhancing industrial capabilities in Africa.
In conclusion, we look forward to fostering more cooperation with UNIDO and Africa in order to promote ISID in the region.
