[Agenda Item 9: Report on the UNIDO’s cooperation with Africa]

Japan takes note of document on the UNIDO Strategy for Africa. We commend UNIDO’s efforts and commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable industrial development across the African continent.

Japan recognizes the strategic alignment between IDDA III and the UNIDO Strategy for Africa (2023–2025), which together provide a robust framework for strengthening regional ownership, mobilizing resources, and enhancing programmatic impact. We also welcome UNIDO’s proactive preparations for the upcoming IDDA IV and the Strategy’s next cycle (2026–2029), especially in light of the challenges posed by political instability, institutional capacity gaps, and financing constraints.

Japan has actively supported these efforts. At the “UNIDO–Japan Partnership for Africa” event held in Vienna this March, we jointly launched five new projects in Ethiopia, Nigeria, Sudan, and Tanzania, as well as a regional initiative. These projects focus on circular economy, green business, food and water security, and post-conflict recovery. Japan appreciates UNIDO’s strong support and engagement in making the event a key milestone toward TICAD 9, to be held this August in Yokohama.

Looking forward to TICAD 9, Japan hopes to further enhance synergies with UNIDO and African partners, ensuring alignment with the UNIDO Strategy for Africa and building momentum for IDDA IV. We also value close collaboration with private companies to deliver inclusive and sustainable industrial solutions across Africa and expect more opportunities for such a collaboration.

In closing, we encourage UNIDO to further deepen its engagement with African institutions and regional economic communities, and to continue its efforts in integrating industrialization into national development frameworks. Japan stands ready to work closely with UNIDO and African partners to build a sustainable and prosperous future for the continent.
