Thank you, Madame Chair,

Japan appreciates the Director General’s report on this Agenda Item as well as the technical briefing by the Secretariat. Japan highly commends professional and impartial efforts of the Agency related to the safeguards verification in Iran.

Japan strongly supports the Agency to continue to exercise fully its authority in accordance with the Statute in the implementation of the Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol.

Japan expresses serious concern that, for over four months, the accesses notified by the Agency have been denied and that, for almost a year, Iran has not engaged in substantive discussions to clarify Agency’s questions despite their high-level interactions.

Madame Chair,

Agency’s safeguards are a fundamental component of nuclear non-proliferation.

Japan calls upon Iran immediately to cooperate fully with the Agency, including by providing prompt access to the locations specified by the Agency in accordance with its obligations under the Safeguards Agreement and the Additional Protocol.

Lastly, Japan requests the Director General to keep the Board of Governors informed on this issue.
