Thank you, Mr. Chair,
Japan welcomes that the three countries have informed the IAEA at an early stage on the development of this issue.
It is crucially important to maintain the strength of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Japan welcomes the IAEA’s engagement with the three States on this matter in line with its statutory mandate, and in accordance with their respective safeguards agreements with the Agency.
Japan recalls the three countries’ Joint Leaders Statement on AUKUS on 15 September 2021, which reaffirmed that Australia remains committed to fulfilling all of its obligations as a non-nuclear-weapon State, including with the IAEA, and that the three nations are deeply committed to upholding their leadership on global non-proliferation.
The trilateral cooperation on nuclear naval propulsion is still in the very initial stage. We would welcome updates on this issue, as appropriate, in the Director General's introductory statements or in the three countries' statements under the AOB, while we don’t see any particular need to have a discussion in every Board meeting.
Japan continues to pay close attention to the development on this matter and is ready to contribute to maintaining the integrity of the safeguard regime.
