IAEA3月理事会(議題4 原子力・放射線の安全)ステートメント(引原毅大使)(英語ページへのリンク)

Thank you, Madame Chair,

Japan highly appreciates the Agency’s various activities described in the Director General’s report, ‘Nuclear Safety Review 2021’, as nuclear safety plays a critically important role in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

(International Efforts)

Madame Chair,

Although the review meetings of the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Joint Convention, planned to be held this year, have been unfortunately postponed, Japan continues to place importance on these conventions and to further improve our nuclear regulatory framework with the cooperation of the Agency.

Japan contributes to the enhancement of global nuclear safety through various means, such as joining safety standard committees and ConvEx exercises, supporting the activities of the IAEA RANET Capacity Building Centre in Fukushima, and providing support to the development of infrastructure in countries introducing nuclear power plants.

(Efforts related to TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station)

Madame Chair,

March 11th will mark 10 years since the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Japan has a renewed appreciation for the Agency’s activities in the field of nuclear safety since this accident.

We continue to contribute to further strengthening nuclear safety through various occasions inter alia the International Conference on a Decade of Progress after Fukushima Daiichi to be held in November this year.

Regarding TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Japan has been providing the Secretariat with updated comprehensive information, which the Secretariat posts together with its comments on the IAEA website. Japan continues to actively disseminate information on the progress of the aftermath of the accident in a transparent manner, based on scientific evidence.

Before concluding, let me reiterate Japan deeply thanks DDG Juan Carlos Lentijo for his dedicated service for the Agency and all Member States which contributed greatly to increased nuclear safety and nuclear security through the world.

With these comments, Japan takes note of the report contained in GOV/2021/3.

Thank you, Madame Chair.
