Thank you, Mr. Chair,
We appreciate the Agency’s report entitled “Nuclear Technology Review 2022”. It provides a useful summary of remarkable progress made in the fields of both nuclear power generation and non-power generation, in a reader-friendly manner.
Japan hopes that the IAEA will continue to play a central role in promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and thereby contribute actively to achieving the SDGs. In this regard, let me remind its Board that Japan has been a strong supporter of the Agency’s efforts, and made substantial contributions to the projects including the ZODIAC and the NUTEC Plastic initiative.
We believe that the IAEA's efforts should be appropriately highlighted at the next NPT Review Conference.

Mr. Chair,
Global health is a highly prioritized theme for the promotion of Japan’s international development cooperation. As such, Japan welcomes the launch of the IAEA’s “Rays of Hope” initiative, and shares its objectives.
Japan appreciates the IAEA's 60 years of support to Member States in cancer control, and Japan is pleased with the long time cooperation between the IAEA and many Japanese experts and institutions.
We expect that the “Rays of Hope” initiative will fit in the various ongoing efforts with Member States and other international organizations such as WHO, whose experts participate in various IAEA projects.
As I mentioned in my previous statements, it is important for the IAEA to forge new partnerships with non-traditional partners in order to maximize the impact and sustainability of the IAEA’s efforts to respond to the growing cancer burden.
In this context, the Government of Japan welcomes consultations that have taken place toward building broader partnerships between the Secretariat and the Japanese private sector, as well as the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) related to the “Rays of Hope” initiative.

The Nuclear Technology Review 2022 also reports the growing importance of the role of nuclear power in tackling climate change. We strongly support the Agency’s active participation in high level international climate and energy fora, in particular, at the COP27 to be held in Egypt.
In addition, we look forward to the Agency’s continued efforts of the 5th International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century, which will be hosted by the United States in close cooperation with other international organizations, the nuclear industry and relevant shareholders.
