Thank you, Chair,
Japan thanks the Director General for his report and his and important latest oral updates. We perceive the practical modalities to resume inspection activities in Iran agreed between Iran and the Agency yesterday in Cairo as an important step towards the full resumption of cooperation between them.
We commend the relentless efforts of the DG and the Secretariat to address the ongoing critical situation and strongly support their professional and impartial work. In this regard, we condemn unfounded accusations made against DG and his team.
Japan remains seriously concerned over the significant accumulation of Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium and its status. As the DG’s latest report indicates, the verification of these materials is overdue. We are also concerned with the fact that the Agency has lost continuity of knowledge in relation to the current inventories of nuclear materials.
While considering the difficulties in facilities affected by the military attack, we call on Iran for full cooperation with the Agency and an urgent resumption of full implementation of safeguards, including regarding the highly enriched uranium and the new enrichment plant in Isfahan.
Finally, Japan encourages once again all parties to constructively engage in diplomatic efforts to resolve Iran's nuclear issue. In this regard, Japan also emphasizes the need of to make concrete progress immediately on this issue through constructive consultations between Iran and the E3, the United States and other relevant countries, and through full cooperation between Iran and the Agency. Japan will continue necessary diplomatic efforts, in cooperation with the international community.
Japan asks the Director General to keep the Board of Governors informed of any developments, so that this important issue can continue to be addressed properly.
